The Haunted Writer #2 - 3AM Inspiration
(Interior scene: It’s late at night and I’m in the bathroom washing up for bed. I’ve just finished when I suddenly get an idea for a story that I’m working on. I grab my phone to jot it down but decide I’m too tired and I’d better start fresh in the morning.)
Leo: (Pops his head out of the bathroom mirror) What do you think you’re doing?
Me: (Yelping) Jeez, Leo! How many times do I have to tell you not to do that?! You almost made me drop my phone.
Leo: (With his head still floating) Yeah, yeah. I’m sorry. But why aren’t you writing down that idea that you just got? It’s brilliant!
Me: (Yawning) Because I’m tired, Leo. You’re my muse. Can’t you just remind me of it in the morning?
Leo: (Gliding fully through the mirror) You know that’s not how it works. You have to jot it down now while you’re fired up with inspiration so that you can expand and refine the idea later.
Me: (Groaning) But it’s complicated and will take me at least a half hour! Besides, I worked all day.
Leo: Oh, yeah. (Rolling his eyes) I forgot. You got soooo much done today.
Me: Hey! I tried, okay? I sat down in front of the computer for over an hour. I couldn’t stay there all day wasting time. I do have other things to do, you know.
Leo: (Crosses his arms) I know that. You got your chores done and while you were cleaning the house, distracted by other things, your unconscious mind was working out your writing problem for you. (He gestures to me.) Here’s the result! You should be thrilled.
Me: (Whining) But it’s almost 3am! I want to go to bed.
Leo: (Throws up his hands) I can’t help how your mind works! You’re on your own internal clock. All I can do is strongly encourage you to jump on the ideas as you receive them. But hey, in the end, it’s all up to you. I’m just the muse. I’m here to cheer you on, not to run your life. If you want to go to bed, then go to bed, but I doubt you’ll fall asleep with this idea bouncing around in your head.
Me: (Sighing, I lean against the bathroom counter and open the note app on my phone.) Sometimes you drive me crazy.
Leo: (Chuckles) The feeling’s mutual.
Me: (Groaning) And this is the last time that I’m staying up this late!
Leo: Uh huh. I've heard that one before.
